After no one finished in the inaugural 1987 Barkley again, runners showed up in force for the 1988 Barkley Marathons–though, notably, there were no Marines. Gary had scared them all off, but this year there was no lack of quality talent at the starting line…including first-time runner Ed Furtaw.
